The Book

Meet Leon. He isn’t just a dog. He is the King of the Big Den, Commander of the Perimeter, and fierce protector of his Tall Ones.

Rescued from a cold, concrete patio, Leon takes his new royal duties very seriously. Alongside his goofy, crumb-obsessed brother Troy, he rules his household with a booming Bark-Alarm and an iron Thunder Pad, determined to protect his family from the “Big Dark”—the invisible sadness that sometimes haunts humans.

But when a sudden, devastating spinal illness leaves Leon paralyzed, his reign is threatened. Stripped of the use of his back legs, Leon refuses to surrender. Strapped into a “Royal Chariot,” he continues to lead his pack, proving that a King’s true power comes from his heart, not his Earth-Movers.

Sensing his time on guard duty is drawing to a close, Leon races against the clock to formulate an action plan to protect his humans and document his legacy. What follows is a uniquely hilarious and deeply moving adventure as a dog prepares his final, special gift for his Tall Ones.

Told entirely from the perspective of the dogs who lived it, The World According to Leon is a profoundly beautiful story of resilience. It explores the chaotic joy of rescue dogs, the unique way a reactive dog views the world, the realities of caring for a disabled pet, and the unbreakable bond between humans and their Four-Leggers.

Prepare to laugh, cry, and learn exactly what it takes to secure the perimeter forever.

Meet the Authors

Douglas Haines officially holds the title of author, but he is the first to admit he was merely the designated typist for the true mastermind of this memoir: Leon. When Leon exploded into Douglas’s life, he didn’t just stage a hostile takeover of the house—he began dictating the legacy that fills these pages. As Commander of the Perimeter, Leon took his protective duties seriously. The World According to Leon chronicles his daily battles against the wind, the postman, and other dogs, while showing how his humor shielded his family from the “Big Dark.”

Their co-authorship faced its greatest challenge when Leon was diagnosed with incurable spinal cancer at just four years old. However, losing his “Earth-Movers” only accelerated Leon’s writing process. Douglas and his wife, Inge, simply became his legs, chauffeuring him to every crucial sniffing spot so he could meticulously gather data for his “Master Scent Log.” Strapped into his “Royal Chariot,” Leon worked tirelessly on his final project, whilst also continuing to rule the Den with a booming Bark-Alarm.

When Leon retired from his earthly guard duties in May 2024, he left behind his “Master Scent Log” story of his adventures and love. Prodded by Leon’s goofy brother, Troy, Douglas sat down at the keyboard to translate the log his furry co-author had so carefully compiled. The World According to Leon is the result of that final collaboration—a memoir designed to keep a King’s joyful, arrogant voice alive, and to offer a way to other dog lovers to reconnect with their departed beloved Four Leggers.
